Sandra Annette Bullock was born in Washington, D.C., to opera singer Helga and John W. Bullock (American voice teacher). She frequently participated in the kids' chorus of whichever play her mother was playing. Later, the same singing ability served her well in The Thing Called Love, where she played an aspiring singer. When Bullock was a teenager, her family returned to Washington. Later, she enrolled at University in North Carolina to pursue an acting degree. She soon relocated to New York to seek a career in theatre.
