About (Profile/Biography):
Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was the first person to travel into space, a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. On April 12, 1961, Gagarin made one orbit of the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft. He received numerous decorations and honours, including the Hero of the Soviet Union, the highest honour bestowed by his country, for reaching this significant Space Race milestone. He also became an international celebrity. Gagarin resumed his studies in Gzhatsk after the family relocated there in 1946. A rudimentary school that was established in the community and administered by a young woman who offered to be the instructor accepted Yuri and Boris as students.
Career:
In 1950: Gagarin started his foundryman apprenticeship at a steel mill in Lyubertsy, close to Moscow.
In 1955: He received admission to Orenburg's First Chkalovsky Higher Air Force Pilots School.
In 1956: He started his training on the Yak-18, which he was previously familiar with, and eventually advanced to training on the MiG-15.
In 1957: Gagarin completed 166 hours and 47 minutes of air time before being promoted to lieutenant in the Soviet Air Forces.
In 1960: Gagarin started his training at Moscow's Khodynka Airfield.
Achievements and Awards:
In 1960: Gagarin received the Gold Air Medal.
In 1961: He was recognised as a Czechoslovak Hero of Socialist Labor.
In 1962: He also received the golden keys to the gates of Cairo and the Order of the Nile.
Unknown Facts:
Gagarin was the son of lowly workers, unlike Titov, who came from a middle-class family. The Soviet government may have wanted to capitalise on this fact to show that even people from poor backgrounds could thrive under Communism.
During Gagarin's re-entry through the atmosphere, Gagarin's descent module and service module separated, causing violent shaking. He parachuted before hitting the ground near the Volga River.
