Frederic E. Mohs Career

After completing his medical degree, Mohs continued his education at the University of Wisconsin Hospital, where he completed a residency in surgery.

In 1936, he began experimenting with a new technique of chemosurgery to treat skin cancer. The technique involved applying a chemical solution to the skin to kill cancerous cells, followed by surgical removal of the affected area.

Over time, Mohs refined the technique to remove cancerous cells layer by layer until all the cancer had been removed.

In the 1940s, Mohs began developing a new technique that combined surgery with pathology to treat skin cancer. This technique, known as Mohs micrographic surgery, involves removing thin layers of tissue and examining them under a microscope to determine if all the cancerous cells have been removed.

Mohs began performing the procedure in the 1950s, and it quickly became the gold standard for treating skin cancer.

Mohs also trained many other physicians in the technique and established the American College of Mohs Surgery to promote the use of the technique in the treatment of skin cancer.
