Ritu Kumar is a fashion designer from India. She has worked in India's modeling industry for more than 40 years, making her one of the country's most well-known fashion designers. She completed her education at the Loreto Convent in Shimla before moving to Lady Irwin College in New Delhi to complete her graduation. Ritu later won a scholarship to study art history at Briarcliff College in New York. She then applied to study museology at the Asutosh Museum of Indian Art, which at the time was a division of the University of Calcutta.
Career:
In 1960s & 70s: Ritu Kumar eventually expanded into international markets with bridal wear and evening clothes.
In 1970s: She was interviewed for the Harvard Business School's Creating Emerging Markets project
In 1996: Kumar's company also has stores in Paris, London, and New York as well as in India.
In 1999: She closed her London branch after three years.
In 2002: Together with her son Amrish, she launched the "Label" line.
Achievements and Awards:
In 2012: She received the Achievement Award at the L'Oreal Paris Femina Women's Awards.
In 2013: Indian government awarded her the Padma Shri.
Her business's annual revenue grew to Rs. 10 billion in the 1990s, surpassing that of several other Indian fashion retailers at the time.
