Mary Ritter Beard, a well-known American historian, was born in Indiana. American historian, suffragist, and social activist Mary Ritter Beard was brought up in a home that valued education and supported her in following her passions. She graduated from DePauw University with a degree in ancient studies and continued her education at Oxford University in England. Her father was a lawyer who had fought in the Civil War as a colonel. The Republican Party, Methodism, and temperance were all part of the family heritage. Mary was raised in suburban comfort in a middle-class neighborhood.

Mary actively opposed the First and Second Wars and was a pacifist and peace activist. She was active in the labour movement and a supporter of workers' rights.
