George Conway attended regional public schools while growing up in New York City.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Harvard University in 1984 before going on to Yale Law School to obtain his Juris Doctor in 1987.

Conway served as a legal clerk for Second Circuit Judge Ralph K. Winter Jr. after graduating from law school. After that, he practised corporate litigation as a litigation associate at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in New York City.

Conway became a partner in Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz's law firm in 1992. His clientele included significant firms including Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, and Philip Morris as he continued to practise corporate law.
