On June 24, 1945, in Peekskill, New York, George Pataki was born. Pataki attended Yale University on a scholarship in 1963 after graduating from Peekskill High School, and he left the school in 1967. Pataki engaged in debates while serving as the chairman of the Yale Political Union's Conservative Party.In 1970, he graduated with a J.D. from Columbia Law School.

• As a lawyer at Plunkett and Jaffe, P.C. in Peekskill, Pataki made the acquaintance of Michael C. Finnegan, who would later play a key role in arranging Pataki's rise to prominence.
• Later on, Finnegan would oversee Pataki's campaigns for governor, state assembly, mayor, and state senator.
