Calvin Coolidge was born in Vermont, and later became the 30th President of the United States. He served from 1923 to 1929 after succeeding President Warren G. Harding who died in office. His political career started with the Northampton Republican Club, which he joined around 1900. From there, he gained a position on the City Council then became a city solicitor in 1900, then finally obtained a county clerkship in 1903, and chairmanship of the regional Republican Party in 1904. Something about his personality made things move slowly and work out for him. The scandals were cleaned up, assistance for businesses were provided, and as a result of all that the economy thrived.

Coolidge was a popular president, but his reputation has been criticized by some historians who argue that he did not do enough to address the economic inequalities that emerged during his presidency. Coolidge died in 1933.
The only election setback he ever suffered was when he ran for a position on the Northampton School Board in 1905 and was unsuccessful.
Calvin gained popularity quickly. He received more than 54% of the vote in 1924, benefiting from what was becoming known as "Coolidge affluence."
