Chidambaram Subramaniam was born on 30 January 1910. During the independence movement, he was an Indian politician and activist. He served as Minister of Finance and Minister of Defence in the union cabinet. He later served as the Governor of Maharashtra. As Minister for Food and Agriculture, he ushered the Indian Green Revolution, which brought self-sufficiency in food production. He worked with M. S. Swaminathan, B. Sivaraman, and Norman E. Borlaug. His contribution to ushering the Green Revolution earned him the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award, in 1998.
Career:
1952-1962: During the administrations of Rajaji and K. Kamaraj, he served as education, law and finance minister for Madras State.
1962: He was the Minister for Steel and Mines when he was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1962. He then held the position of Minister of Food and Agriculture. From 2 May 1971 to 22 July 1972, he also served as the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.
1976: He served as the finance minister during the crisis and suggested that the Indian rupee be devalued.
1979: He was chosen by Charan Singh to be the union's minister of defence.
1990: He was appointed Maharashtra's governor. After criticising the way P. V. Narasimha Rao, the former Indian prime minister, conducted himself, he announced his resignation.
2000: Subramaniam passed away in Chennai at the age of 90.
