Edson Arantes do Nascimento, popularly known as as Pelé, was born on October 23rd, 1940. He played forward for a Brazilian professional football team. It was his success and popularity that made him one of the most popular and successful sports figures of the 20th century. In 1999, the International Olympic Committee named Pelé the Athlete of the Century as one of Time's 100 most influential people. According to IFFHS, Pelé was one of two joint winners of FIFA Player of the Century 2000.
Career:
1956: A 7-1 victory over Corinthians de Santo André marked his debut in the senior team at the age of 15.
1957: A 16-year-old Pelé started the 1957 season in the first team and was given a starting position.
1961: To prevent Pelé from being transferred abroad, the Brazilian government declared him an "official national treasure".
During the 1958: Campeonato Paulista, Pelé won his first major title with Santos.
A 2–1 defeat against Argentina at the Maracan was Pelé's first international match.
1970: It was suspected that Pelé had leftist sympathies, and the Brazilian military dictatorship investigated him.
1994: UNESCO appointed Pelé as a Goodwill Ambassador.
