Xi Jinping was born in Beijing in 1953 to a well-off family. His father, Xi Zhongxun, was a vice-premier and a veteran of the Chinese Revolution. Growing up with his dad’s background and status Xi developed into a “princeling”, similar to a senior official who has worked their way up from the bottom. Xi had an easy childhood living in a rich neighborhood and going to exclusive schools. He didn’t have to work as hard as others in China because he had connections through his family name. However, instead of following the usual route to gain wealth through being connected to senior officials like him, he used his network for political power.

In 1974: Xi joined the party as an official member and worked as the branch secretary.
In 1982: Xi resigned from that position and continued serving as the CCP's deputy secretary in Hebei province until 1985.
