Jaap Eden was born on 19 October 1873 in Groningen, Netherlands. Jaap Eden was the only male athlete to win world championships in speed skating and bicycle racing. Jaap Eden's gymnastics teacher's father could not care for the baby alone and sent him to the grandparents, who owned a hotel near Santpoort. Jaap Eden's skating technique was noticed by the best professional Dutch skater, Klaas Pander, who invited the 15-year-old Eden to join him in training.
