Her first step into the Arsenal team was joining the boys' team at 13 years of age, but after two years, she became a member of the first team. A 2–0 win over Everton was James' debut for Arsenal in the 2017–18 season. She came on in the 67th minute to replace Lisa Evans. She became Arsenal's second-youngest player on her debut.
