Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom (April 3, 1926 – January 27, 1967) was a pioneering American astronaut, engineer, and Air Force test pilot. He was a member of the Mercury Seven, a group of elite astronauts selected by NASA for Project Mercury. Grissom was the second American in space and the second American to fly in space twice. He was also part of the Gemini and Apollo space programs. Grissom tragically died during a pre-launch test for the Apollo 1 mission.
