About (Profile/Biography):
Taylor Mali was born on March 28, 1965. He graduated from Bowdoin College with a BA and from Kansas State University with an MA in poetry. Mali, who taught in a classroom for over nine years, was known for defending the teaching profession through poetry. The poet has appeared on the TV show Def Jam Poetry and the documentaries SlamNation (1997) and Slam Planet (2006). Former president of Poetry Slam, Inc., he has recorded numerous books on tape, including The Great Fire (2003), for which he won the Golden Earphones Award. As a voiceover artist, he has worked with Westchester Community College, Bowery Poetry Club, and NYC-Urbana poetry series.

• Four of Taylor Mali's National Poetry Slam teams won: Team Providence in 1996; Team NYC-Urbana in 1997, 2000, and 2002.
• Two of his books, What Learning Leaves and The Last Time as We Are, have been published in numerous anthologies.
Taylor Mali Teaching
• Taylor Mali taught English, history, and math for nine years, including at Browning School, a boys' school in New York City, and Cape Cod Academy, an independent school on Cape Cod.
• Taylor Mali set out to create 1,000 new teachers in 2000 through "poetry, persuasion, perseverance, or passion." His goal was reached in April 2012.

• Taylor Mali has been married three times. In 1993, he married Rebecca Ruth Tauber, who died in 2004; in 2006, he married Marie-Elizabeth Mundheim, who died in 2012. Mali married Rachel Kahan on August 11, 2013.
• In 2015, he became a father to a baby boy, and in 2017, he became a father to a baby girl.
